1,438 individuals admitted to hospital in Brunei Darussalam in 2020 were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. The disease has also caused approximately 500 deaths every year in the country. According to the Minister of Health, cardiovascular disease is the second highest cause of death in the country, contributing almost 25 percent to the cause of deaths in 2019. In the message in conjunction with World Heart Day 2021 celebration, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Awang Mohammad Isham Bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health said, cardiovascular disease including heart disease and stroke is among the 4 major diseases apart from cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease, which contributes to about 69 percent of premature deaths in adults.

The control of risk factors, according to the Minister of health is vital in preventing the disease. This includes, practising a balanced diet, being physically active, not smoking, being positive and getting enough sleep. The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic that has hit the country has caused serious symptoms among the vulnerable population such as senior citizens and those with chronic health problems.

As part of the government's efforts to prevent and control cardiovascular disease, the Ministry of Health celebrates World Heart Day every 29th of September. The theme 'Use Heart to Connect' urges the public to use the knowledge, love and empathy as well as influence of every individual to ensure they have the best chance of continuing a healthy life through the use of digital health technology.

Meanwhile, the use of Digital Health Technology or Tele-Health plays a major role during the COVID-19 pandemic to increase the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease. Use existing digital networks to assist in heart healthcare.
