World Health Assembly 24 May – 1 June

Brunei Darussalam has recently passed one year without any COVID-19 local infections. However, precautionary measures still remains in place in Brunei Darussalam especially when most of the cases are detected among those arriving in Brunei Darussalam. The Minister of Health shared the matter during the 74th World Health Assembly held virtually. The assembly took place on the 24th of May until the 1st of June 2021. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Md Isham bin Haji Jaafar explained among the measures implemented to monitor and control the public health situation in Brunei Darussalam is sustainable system maintenance and health technology as well as good health treatment system in line with the Ministry of Health's mission in ensuring a continuous and high quality health system provision which is also comprehensive and effective.

Yang Berhormat urged every member country to play their respective roles in realising the Global Health Agenda, which is the basis of the achievement of the Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goals. The assembly involved 194 member countries, global health organisations representatives, state or government leaders as well as presidents of international and regional organisations. During the Assembly, a number of main issues were highlighted, among them the COVID-19 pandemic and COVID-19 vaccine, mental health and response towards the COVID-19 pandemic, Non-Communicable Diseases and Patient Safety. The Assembly also discussed Agenda 25, which is the report on the health and humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestine Territories, including East Baitulmuqadis, and Golan heights in Syria occupied by Israel, of which Brunei Darussalam fully supports the agenda and also voted for it to remain as agenda. The World Health Organisation member countries voted and the majority supported for the report to remain.
