Towards achieving Wawasan Brunei 2035, citizens and residents of Brunei Darussalam play an important role in maintaining health to prevent and control diabetes.

The Minister of Health stated that in 2021, 537 million adults worldwide suffer from diabetes and the number is expected to increase to 643 million people by 2030. In a message in conjunction with World Diabetes Day 2022, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar expressed his concern that almost 1 out of 2 adults do not realise they have diabetes and 6.7 million deaths due to diabetes were recorded.

According to Yang Berhormat, citizens and permanent residents in this country have the opportunity to gain access to the healthcare system for free, including the provision of diabetes clinics, education by Diabetes nurse educators, nutritionists and annual retinopathy screening. World Diabetes Day is held every 14th November. The World Diabetes Day 2021 to 2023 theme of “Access to Diabetes Care” focuses on the need for better access to quality diabetes education for medical professionals and people with diabetes.
