World Alzheimer’s Month

​The Ministry of Health has prepared and will always examine the needs of a health system and infrastructure that is easily accessible and fair as well as high quality to all residents of Brunei Darussalam to ensure that all individuals will be able to benefit from the services provided, including in dealing with the issue of dementia. In a message in conjunction with the World Alzheimer’s Month celebration, the MINISTER OF HEALTH shared that the Ministry also works closely with various government agencies as well as non-governmental organisations, to raise awareness about dementia and implement interventions and activities related to it.

According to Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, the Ministry of Health will also ensure that health care workers and volunteers can be adequately trained so that they can provide advice and relevant care services for all individuals suffering from dementia and their family members and caregivers. Among the efforts that can be made to overcome the dementia are knowing about the symptoms and risk factors of dementia, increasing daily physical activities, as well as involving oneself, family members and friends to learn about dementia by obtaining information and advice from the valid sources.

The Lancet publication analysis of Global Burden of Disease study 2019, estimates that there are 1,574 cases in Brunei Darussalam and it is expected to increase by 365 per cent to 7,317 by 2050.  Meanwhile, the types of dementia that are common in the country, among them due to the high rate of non-communicable diseases, NCD, vascular type dementia are also commonly found among the senior citizens. September is World Alzheimer’s Month, while the theme of this year’s celebration remains the same as last year, namely ‘Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’, which underlines efforts to increase public knowledge, particularly about the warning signs of dementia and the importance of timely diagnosis.
