Special Summit’s Plenary Session One

His Majesty along with other ASEAN Leaders proceeded to the Loy Henderson International Conference Room to attend the ASEAN-U.S. Special Summit. During Plenary Session One, His Majesty in a titah expresses appreciation to the United States for its renewed commitment to climate change, as seen at the COP-26 in Scotland and congratulates President Biden's personal efforts to work with other major powers to implement the Paris Agreement.

His Majesty in the titah adds that ASEAN is also placing greater emphasis on addressing climate change including through the establishment of an ASEAN Climate Change Centre, His Majesty also thanked the U.S. for its readiness to provide a Science Fellow to support the creation of the Centre in Brunei Darussalam. Looking ahead, His Majesty believes that there is more to be done in taking forward commitments in climate action, especially through capacity building. His Majesty affirms that Brunei Darussalam is prioritising efforts to ensure its economy remains resilient and sustainable through utilisation of low carbon technologies, as well as promoting initiatives aimed at lowering net carbon emission. His Majesty welcomes the U.S.' engagement in climate change initiatives in the region. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

The Plenary Session One on Climate was chaired by Her Excellency Kamala D. Harris, Vice President of the United States of America. In her welcoming remarks, the Vice President of the United States of America noted the impacts of the climate crisis on ASEAN and the U.S. and therefore called for both sides to raise collective ambition and meet infrastructure needs in a sustainable manner. The U.S. has launched initiatives on clean energy and climate smart infrastructure; partnerships on sustainable transportation and forest conservation; as well as satellite data sharing to respond to extreme weather. During the Plenary Session, Leaders also discussed on climate action; clean energy transformation; and sustainable infrastructure.
