Road accidents recorded a significant decrease during the last three years. According to the Investigation and Traffic Control Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force, the decrease is the result of numerous efforts including those by the National Road Safety Council in organising road safety awareness campaigns.
Two thousand, six hundred and eighty four road accidents were recorded in 2017. The number fell to one thousand, one hundred and ninety six cases last year.
Road fatalities have also decreased. In 2017, 29 fatalities were recorded. In 2018, road fatalities decreased to 17. There were only 13 cases last year.
Last year's statistics showed 358 road accidents caused injuries compared to 433 cases in 2018. In 2017, road accidents that caused injuries totalled 529. Most of the injured were between 18 to 28 years old.
Accidents involving heavy commercial vehicles also decreased in the last three years. 2017 recorded 67 cases. There was 51 such cases in 2018 and 46 last year. Road users are advised to drive carefully and courteously as well as being tolerant with one another. They should ensure safety measures especially on the roads.
