Opening Of the Legal Year 2023

The issue of ethics and professional standards in the legal profession was addressed by Yang Amat Arif Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court at the Opening of the Legal Year 2023, yesterday morning. Yang Amat Arif said, according to data provided by the Law Society of Brunei Darussalam, there were 23 complaints heard by the Inquiry Committee from 2018 to 2022, of which 3 were investigated by the Disciplinary Committee. Meanwhile, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa, the Attorney General, in his speech touched on the Attorney General Chamber's wilingness to foster closer cooperation with Government institutions to give guidance on the formulation of their policies and practices as well as the enforcement of their statutory powers and duties. The tradition of Opening the Legal Year underscores the central role of the Judiciary in the administration of justice. Also in attendance were Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa bin Pehin Datu Perdana Manteri Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Ibrahim, Special Advisor to His Majesty and Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; Dato Seri Paduka Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, Acting Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Dato Seri Paduka Awang Mohd Riza bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yunos, Deputy Minister for Civil Service Governance at the Prime Minister's Office.
