During the National Business Conference 2023 on Brunei Darussalam as a Smart Nation, the Minister of Transport and Infocommunications outlined that innovation as the core of the businesses or processes and the ability to address newly introduced vulnerabilities in the entire end to end value stream, whether in delivering goods and services or in manufacturing, are vital in efforts to ensure long-term digital economic sustainability. Speaking in reference to lessons learned from the nation's digital transformation efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Mustapha highlighted that the country needs to be agile in order to best harness the potential and innovation that digital technologies represent.

A Smart Nation is not just about government services that improve the quality of lives, but also involves the digital transformation of the nation's industries and businesses. Yang Berhormat added that while local businesses have been quick to incorporate consumer-facing technology innovations such as e-Commerce and social media marketing, the adoption and application of technologies can also improve efficiency and productivity which in turn can help them to remain competitive.
