Various ‘khat’ or Islamic calligraphy programmes and activities have been lined up by the Islamic Calligraphy and Art Study Centre, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah throughout the year, including a Khat Competition aimed to instil interest towards khat and polish the people’s talents and skills in khat. This year, the centre held the ASEAN Level Khat Competition for the very first time to commemorate Yayasan’s 30th anniversary of its establishment. Yesterday afternoon, the ASEAN Level Khat Competition 2022 Prize Presentation Ceremony was held at Dewan An-Naura, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex.

The prizes were presented by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health as Deputy Chairman of the Yayasan Board of Director. Also present, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Di-Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa, Attorney General, and Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister, Department of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office as members of the Yayasan Board of Directors.

Huda Purnawadi from Indonesia was crowned as the champion, while Miftahul Huda and Muhammad Syamsudin, also from Indonesia, placed second and third respectively. The competition aimed to strengthen relations among ASEAN member states aside from raising awareness as well as improve the youth’s quality in mastering various aspects of Islamic arts specifically khat.
