As of yesterday, nearly 3000 water and electricity smart meter units have been installed at private homes and commercial buildings nationwide operated by DST Network Sendirian Berhad through the United Smart Meter System USMS Project. For the Department of Water Services, the implementation of the project not only generates efficient management of water resources but at the same time, helps to reduce arrears.

As of September this year, about $22 million of water bill arrears were recorded by the Department of Water Services, Ministry of Development nationwide. The amount includes water bill arrears of government agencies; commercial and personal. Thus, the implementation of the USMS project helps in more efficient revenue collection management. According to Awang Haji Munim Bin Haji Ismail, Head of Revenue Unit of Billing and Metering Division, in the matter of water bill arrears in the old account, the arrears will be deducted from the monthly top-ups. The monthly deduction and period of deduction are according to the total arrears. For example if the arrears is $80, the monthly deduction is $16, while if the arrears amounts to $300, the monthly deduction will be $30 for 10 months.

Through the digital system, users can check water consumption every 24 hours; check credit balance and top up at www.usms.com.bn or USMS mobile app. This indirectly helps users to plan and change their water usage habits according to their needs.
