MANILA: The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is still determining the cause of the Cessna 172 training aircraft (RP-C6923) crash in the waters of Barangay Canaoay in San Fernando City, La Union on Tuesday morning. A flight instructor and a student pilot sustained minor injuries and were brought to the Lorma Medical Center. The plane, operated by Leading Edge International Aviation Academy, Inc., was conducting touch-and-go flights at San Fernando Airport. "Based on the initial information, the San Fernando Tower received an alert from RP-C6923 declaring an emergency failure at 8:23 in the morning after the second touch-and-go at San Fernando Airport at 8:10 in the morning," the CAAP said in a news release. The 4-seater plane ditched approximately 0.5 nautical miles abeam the threshold of Runway 01, ending up on the shoreline of Barangay Canaoay, the report said. CAAP added that the engine cowling was missing. Oil spill boom deployment Crash and fire rescue teams responded while the Ph ilippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed two 25-meter oil spill booms to control a possible oil spill. A medical team from the PCG and the city's disaster risk reduction and management office rendered first aid to the victims before taking them to the hospital.
