Bandar Seri Begawan: The care and welfare of persons with disabilities (PWD) remain a priority for the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, as highlighted in a message from the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024. The government has been providing a special allowance to caregivers of PWDs based on established criteria, underscoring its commitment to supporting this community.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, plans to offer a Care Provider Course for recipients of the Care Provider Allowance. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad explained that the course will enable family members or caregivers to acquire proper caregiving techniques, ensuring the safety and well-being of PWDs and the elderly.

The 13th intake of the National Service Programm
e will feature a new training module aimed at caring for various community segments, including PWDs. Early diagnosis and support are crucial elements for ensuring inclusivity and equal opportunities, as they enhance developmental outcomes and help children achieve their full potential.

The Plan of Action on Persons with Different Abilities 2020-2024, under the National Council on Social Issues, outlines strategies to enhance PWDs’ access to education and income-generating opportunities, promoting their independence in society. As part of educational efforts, the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports, the Ministry of Education, and the IMPIAN Project will host the Special Needs Resources Exhibition and Forum: Persons with Disabilities in Education and Skills on December 8th. In terms of employment, the ‘Jelajah Kerjaya 2024 Recruitment Drive’ by JobCentre Brunei offers job opportunities and open interviews for local job seekers, including PWDs.

This year’s theme, Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Di
sabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future, stresses the significance of continued participation of PWDs at all levels and the need for cooperation to create an inclusive environment that ensures equal opportunities in education, employment, and society.
