BPP 2021: Demographic, Household and Housing Characteristics

The Population and Housing Census, BPP 2021 was conducted from January to December 2021. According to the BPP 2021: Demographic, Household and Housing Characteristics report issued by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics, DEPS, Ministry of Finance and Economy, Brunei Darussalam’s population during BPP 2021 was 440,715 people.

From the number, 52.7 percent were male and 47.3 percent were female. Brunei Muara District was the most populated with 72.3 percent, followed by Belait District, Tutong District and Temburong District. From the age distribution aspect, 20.5 percent were below 15 years of age, 73.2 percent were in the working age group of 15 to 64 years and 6.3 percent were aged 65 and above.

According to Residential Status, Brunei Citizens make up the largest part with 75.7 percent, followed by Permanent Residents and Temporary Residents. Malays are the largest community in the country at 67.4 percent. Chinese and other races comprise 9.6 percent and 23 percent respectively. The majority of residents in the country are Muslim, at 82.1 percent.

During BPP 2021, occupied housing units in the country was 83,810 units with a household of 87,137 people. Average household size was 5 point 1 household member.

In population distribution, the top five villages with the highest number of residents were Kampung Panchor National Housing Scheme with 3 percent, followed by Kampung Tanah Jambu at 2.7 percent, Kampung Panaga 2.3 percent, Kampung Bukit Beruang 2.2 percent, and Kampung Meragang at 2.1 percent.

Among the top five villages with a highest number of population growth were Kampung Sabun 10.4 percent, Kampung Lugu 10.2 percent, Lumut Kawasan Dua National Housing Scheme 7.8 percent, Kampung Panchor National Housing Scheme 5.2 percent, and Kampung Sengkurong ‘B’ at 4.8 percent.
