ASEAN-Russia Consultations of the High Representatives

The first ASEAN–Russia Consultations of the High Representatives for Security Issues was held virtually via video conferencing yesterday, 28th June 2021. The meeting was hosted by His Excellency Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. Brunei Darussalam delegation to the meeting was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd. Yussof, Second Minister of Defence in his capacity as Chairman of the National Security Committee. Meanwhile, Indonesia, as the Country Coordinator of the ASEAN-Russia Dialogue Partnership was represented by His Excellency, Doctor Pribadi Sutiono, Acting Deputy for Foreign Policy Coordination, Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs. The meeting was also attended by Ministers and head of delegations from ASEAN member state countries.

 

At the meeting, the Russian Federation and ASEAN member states discussed ASEAN and Russia security cooperation as well as exchanged views on security issues and challenges in the Asia-Pacific region. Recognising the importance of regional and international cooperation, Brunei Darussalam looks forward to strengthening collaborative efforts with all Dialogue Partners including Russia through platforms such as the ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Cyber Security, which Russia and Myanmar co-chair in this current 2021-2024 cycle. Brunei Darussalam will continue to maintain concerted efforts, coordination and collaborations not just within ASEAN countries but also with other regional and international dialogue partners. Also present at was Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, Acting Permanent Secretary for Security, Enforcement and Law at the Prime Minister’s Office cum Director of Internal Security Department.
