Annual ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting

The Bandar Seri Begawan Joint Declaration of the 39th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting, AMEM on Energy Security and Energy Transition yesterday marks another significant milestone for the evolution of ASEAN energy cooperation. It reaffirmed the commitment to further strengthen and intensify the efforts in ensuring current and future energy security, accelerating the energy transition in the region, and reflect determination towards realising a truly integrated ASEAN Economic Community. Speaking at the 39th AMEM Ceremonial Event, yesterday afternoon, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md. Hussein explained that the Joint Declaration will therefore chart and consolidate ASEAN efforts to improve energy security and enhance the energy transition in the region.

During the morning session, the Minister of Energy said in line with Brunei Darussalam's ASEAN Chairmanship 2021 theme of 'We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper', two vital tasks are promoted towards advancing the low-carbon energy transition agenda. Also emphasised was AMEM's role in ASEAN community building and highlighting the importance of people-centered and people-oriented Community. The virtual meeting was jointly-chaired by His Excellency Suy Sem, Ministry of Mines and Energy of Cambodia.

The meeting among others discussed the progress of activities of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation or APAEC. Also present was Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy.

The meeting also adopted the Bandar Seri Begawan Joint Declaration of the ASEAN Energy Ministers on Energy Security and Energy Transition as part of Brunei Darussalam's ASEAN Chairmanship's five deliverables for 2021.
