4 cosmetic products were found to be adulterated with undeclared substances. The results of laboratory tests conducted by Pharmacy Section, Department of Scientific Laboratory Services, Ministry of Health found that the products contain adulterants that can cause adverse effects that can endanger health such as Hydroquinone and mercury.
Unsupervised use of Hydroquinone can cause skin discoloration, skin hypersensitivity and an increased risk of skin cancer. While the use of Mercury at high levels can cause skin numbness, headaches, rashes, skin discoloration, damage to the kidneys and nervous system. The Ministry of Health has not issued any approval for the importation of the products for sale in this country. In this regard, the public who have purchased these products are advised to stop using them immediately.
