9th Council of ASEAN Chief Justices’ Meeting

The Council of ASEAN Chief Justices Meeting, CACJ has the role in supporting people and communities by ensuring access to justice and ensuring the fair and efficient administration of justice. These include the efforts of the Working Group on Cross Border Disputes Involving Children and how it is hoped that in bringing ASEAN judiciaries together, systems of family justice within ASEAN; and help care for the region's people. The Chief Justice stated the matter during the virtual 9th CACJ Meeting.

The Honourable Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong also highlighted Brunei's theme for its ASEAN Chairmanship, 'We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper', and how these three fundamental areas apply to the sphere of judicial cooperation in the CACJ. Apart from that, the Honourable also credited the efforts of the Working Group on Judicial Education Training in identifying new ways of conducting training and education programmes for judiciaries, particularly during the pandemic.

The CACJ provides a regular forum for the Chief Justices to discuss and exchange views on common issues facing the ASEAN Judiciaries. It is a platform to promote close relations and build mutual understanding among the ASEAN Judiciaries.

The annual meeting was chaired by the Honourable Professor Doctor Muhammad Syarifuddin, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia. Also participating was His Excellency Dato Paduka Lim Hock Hoi, the Secretary-General of ASEAN. During the meeting, the Joint Declaration of the 9th CACJ was adopted by the Chief Justices and Heads of Delegations.
