259 graduates received the Doctor of Philosophy, Masters and Bachelor degrees as well as Diplomas during the 9th Convocation of Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College, KUPU SB this year. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam who is Chancellor of KUPU SB conferred the degrees and diplomas.
Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by:
Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs as Chairman of KUPU SB Council.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti; and
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar, Chief Syarie Judge who are Members of the KUPU SB Council; and
Doctor Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar, Ra'es KUPU SB as well as the Executive Committee Members of the 9th Convocation.
The event began with the recital of Surah AlFatihah led by the State Mufti.
The mass reading of the Holy AlQuran's Surah Hud by the graduates echoed in the Plenary Hall. They read from Verses 112 to 117 which among others reminded Muslims to always do good deeds and not exceed the laws of Allah because Allah Subahanahu Wataala favours His servants who do good things.
The Ra'es of KUPU SB in his welcoming address said since the 8th Convocation last year, KUPU SB continues to take measures towards realising the philosophy of its establishment as a beneficial and effective religious teacher's university through various formal and informal activities. He added in response to His Majesty's titah at the previous convocation to use infotechnology in creative, innovative and productive ways, KUPU SB in its 20192024 Strategic Plan will strive to digitalise Islamic Knowledge sources, pedagogy courses and the university's compulsory courses in simpler, faster, friendlier, more interactive, interesting and effective multimedia formats. The material would be used as teaching and learning resources at KUPU SB and be shared with religious schools and teachers.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam then uttered the titah of the Chancellor's authority to officiate the ceremony.
From the 259 graduates, one received a Doctor of Philosophy, PhD degree in Religious Teaching, 6 received the Master's degree in Religious Teaching, 51 received the Post Graduate Diploma in Religious Teaching and 96 received the Bachelor's degree in Religious Teaching. Meanwhile, 101 graduates received the Higher Diploma in Religious Teaching and 4 received the Diploma in AlQuran Arts Study. This year, KUPU SB for the very first time produced a Doctor of Philosophy, PhD Religious Teaching graduate in Education.
Graduates who received the Higher Diploma in Religious Teaching were the first batch studying the new curriculum that began in 2016. They were given the opportunity to upgrade their experience to the Bachelor degree level by coordinating credit hours for their courses according to their achievements. Meanwhile, the 2016 intake Bachelor of Religious Teaching students have started the minor program according to their interests and fields.
As a higher Religious Teachers institution in the country, KUPU SB continues to play its role in producing pious, moral, strong, competitive, learned, open minded, highly skilled and committed educators and leaders. The university college ensures that its students gain knowledge, good manners and skills to fulfil the needs of the century by adhering to the teachings of Islam practised by the Ahli Sunnah Waljama'ah and upholding the country's Malay, Islamic Monarchy, MIB philosophy.
To bless the ceremony, the Doa Selamat was read by the State Mufti.
KUPU SB's role is to train its graduates as humble and sincere religious teachers to uphold what Islam has entrusted to them in continuing the agenda of developing Islamic education in the country. Inline with its formation, KUPU SB continues to proudly produce pious educators and leaders with integrity and be recognised as an international class higher learning institution.
