6th AMMS & 3rd AMMS+Japan

The importance of adaptability and the utilisation of technological advancements to stabilise the impact of COVID-19 not only in sports but also the overall development of ASEAN. According the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, the participation of ASEAN Member states in the recent Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games 2020 is a testament to the resilience of sports at the regional and national levels.

Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, shared the matter at the 6th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports, 6th AMMS via video conference, 28th October. The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Edwin Tong, Minister of Culture, Community and Youth, Republic of Singapore.

Yang Berhormat added under Brunei Darussalam's Chairmanship of ASEAN 2021, sports cooperation in the region will be further strengthened with the establishment of new collaborative frameworks with ASEAN's Dialogue Partners. During the Meeting, the AMMS-6 Ministers reaffirmed the importance of promoting an active ASEAN Community where sports serves as an essential means in advancing socio-cultural development and promoting peace. Initiatives taken by National Sports Associations and the endurance of recreational sports within existing guidelines in Brunei Darussalam were also highlighted. During the Meeting, the Ministers also endorsed the Joint Statement of the 6th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports and welcomed Thailand as Chair and host of the 7th AMMS for 2023.

Also held was the 3rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports plus Japan. The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of Member States to further strengthen ASEAN-Japan cooperation on sports and took note on the implementation of the second phase of ASEAN-Japan Actions on Sports project with a focus on physical education teacher education and sport for people with disability in ASEAN Member States in the year 2021-2022. Capacity building for anti-doping activities and collaboration under ASEAN-Japan Cooperation on sports was also promoted and highlighted in the meeting.
