 32nd Teacher’s Day

The culmination of the Teacher’s Day celebration was the presentation of the Teacher’s Day Awards to 109 recipients. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam presented the awards at the ceremony. The event took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs; Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Doctor Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Minister of Education, as Co-Chairpersons of the Celebration; as well as members of the Celebration’s Executive Committee.

Also present were His Majesty’s sons and brother:

– His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office;

– His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik;

– And, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah.

The function began with the recitation of Surah Al- Fatihah dedicated to Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien and teachers who have passed away and Doa Selamat led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

The reading of Al-Quran, Surah AN-Nahl Verses 1 to 12 was presented by Awang Haji Mohd Hendra bin Haji Meraji, Special Inspectorate, Islamic Studies Department.

In her welcoming speech, the Minister of Education among other things said Education Response and Recovery Strategies drawn up by the Ministry of Education should ensure that students, including those with special needs, can return to the expected level of education.

His Majesty then presented awards for the 30th, 31st and 32nd Teacher’s Day. The ‘Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Education Award’ was presented to Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman. It was for Yang Dimuliakan Pehin’s significant contributions in charting and leading efforts in developing and advancing policies, systems and improving the country’s level of education. Yang DiMuliakan Pehin received a Citation, $20,000 cash, souvenir and free medical services.

The Meritorious Teacher Award was presented to 6 retirees who have made great contributions to the country’s education landscape. The first recipient was Datin Paduka Hajah Azizah binti Panglima Asgar Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah for Teacher’s Day 2020. The second recipient for the same year was Associate Professor Doctor Haji Hashim bin Haji Abdul Hamid. The first recipient of the Meritorious Teacher Award 2021 was Datin Paduka Doctor Hajah Masnon binti Haji Ibrahim. Awang Haji Md Daud ALIAS Haji Mokti bin Taha was the second recipient for 2021. And the first recipient of the Meritorious Teacher Award 2022 was Doctor Haji Azaharaini bin Haji Mohd Jamil. Datin Paduka Hajah Zasia binti Sirin was this year’s second recipient of the award. The recipients received Citations, $12,000 cash, souvenirs and free medical services.

23 recipients received the ‘Excellent Teacher Award’. They comprised teachers who are teaching or no longer teaching but are still working at the Ministry of Education or at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and involved in teaching and learning. They received Citations, $4,000, souvenirs and are given priority to further their education depending on the terms of in-service training. 79 teachers received the Special Mention Teacher’s Day Appreciation Award. They received Citations, $1,000 cash and trophies. The Teacher’s Day Awards are significant because they are the nation’s strong recognition towards the teaching profession and professionalism in teaching.
