ASEAN implements various efforts in curbing and addressing the current pandemic. According to the Minister of Health, a number of efforts are implemented in the health sector such as the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases; ASEAN Standard Operating Procedures for Public Health Emergencies; preparing periodic reports on Risk Assessment for International Dissemination of COVID-19 for each ASEAN member state and Risk Communication in tackling false information.
Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Md Isham bin Haji Jaafar stated the matter at the Global Health Summit 2021 that was held online. This year's summit took place in Rome, Italy. Brunei Darussalam received the invitation to attend the summit as this year's ASEAN Chair.
In a keynote address, Mario Draghi, President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic urged for cooperation from all parties to work together in addressing the widespread pandemic by ensuring equal vaccine distribution in each region. The plenary session enabled representatives of G20 nations; global health organisations; heads of states or government as well as presidents of international and regional organisations to provide intervention pertaining to issues raised. The summit discussed on the Coronavirus Global Response, a global action to ensure equity in obtaining COVID-19 vaccination, treatment and tests for each region. Meanwhile, the President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission called for the realisation of the Coronavirus Global Response to strengthen health system in supporting economic recovery, especially in underprivileged region and community. In ending the summit, G20 nations and stakeholders of Rome Declaration adopted a joint statement on equal and just COVID-19 vaccine distribution, treatment and tests.
