Heart failure is one of the most common causes of death around the world, including in Brunei Darussalam. The Left Ventricular Assist Device, LVAD is among the devices used in the country for patients with severe heart problems. The Minister of Health explained, LVAD is a mechanical heart pump used to treat patients with heart failure. Patients wearing LVAD also need to be disciplined in taking medications and need to be monitored. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar shared the matter in an interview during the Doa Kesyukuran Ceremony held in conjunction with 5 years Installation of LVAD Equipment on a patient.
Awang Ramlee bin Haji Kamis, who was diagnosed with severe heart failure in 2002, underwent the installation of HeartMate II, LVAD type with the assistance of the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at Gleneagles, Jerudong Park Medical Centre, JPMC. Brunei Darussalam is one of the countries that use LVAD as a treatment.
