The online Zakat Fitrah or tithe payment that was recently introduced by the Brunei Islamic Religious Council, MUIB is a systematic method in the current era of digitalisation aimed at save time and facilitate the public in paying zakat. According to Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs as the Vice President of MUIB, the online zakat payment is not a new method as it is already used in neighbouring countries, and it provides Muslims the option on how to pay tithe for themselves and their dependants. Speaking at the Presentation of Tithe and Property Tithe Collectors' Credentials to Appointed Tithe Collectors Nationwide for 2021-2022 yesterday morning, the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs said the traditional way of paying tithe through tithe collectors at mosques, surau, religious halls or the tithe collector's residence remains relevant and is still ongoing as previous years. Touching on the duty of a tithe collector, Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom reminded all tithe collectors to carry out their entrusted duties and responsibility with piety.
The Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs added that tithe collectors are also required to adhere to the regulations and instructions given as they collect tithe.
349 tithe collectors were appointed for 140 areas nationwide. Meanwhile at MUIB, 45 tithe collectors were appointed to collect tithes from officers and staff at the said department in all districts. Tithe collection and payments are made at mosques, suraus, religious halls, tithe collector's residence, Tithe Collection and Distribution Office, Brunei Muara District and all branches of the Tithe Collection and Distribution Division in Belait, Tutong and Temburong District. Apart from that, Islamic financial institutions such as Tabung Amanah Islam Brunei TAIB and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, BIBD, are also appointed for collecting only property tithe from their clients.
