Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA, yesterday morning launched a World Book Day Celebration in support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO which declared the 23rd of April as World Book Day. The celebration aims to increase the interest in reading and provide exposure to the surrounding community on the existence of Book and Copyright Day which is recognised by international bodies. The celebration took place at UNISSA's library.
The launching was officiated by Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, Rector of UNISSA and ran concurrently with the launching of an English Language Club - Empower UNISSA. Earlier, Pengiran Doctor Hajah Norkhairiah binti Pengiran Haji Hashim, Acting Director of the Centre for Research and Publication as the event Co-Chair in a welcoming speech said the celebration was held earlier than the declared date by UNESCO, which is to allow teachers and students to focus more on their fasting and beneficial matters.
Also held was a book discussion session titled 'Wakaf Sudah Tiba Masanya Untuk Berubah', delivered by Dr Hajah Mas Nooraini binti Haji Mohiddin, Dean of UNISSA's Syariah and Law Faculty. Among the activities lined up during the World Book Day Week is Ma’rad Kutub that involve exhibition and book sales from government publishers and local book shops. The celebration was organised through UNISSA's library in collaboration with the Centre for Research and Publication and Centre for Promotion of Knowledge and Languages Learning. The 4-day event is open to the public until the 3rd of April from 8:00 in the morning to 4:30 in the afternoon.
