The Minister of Health also touched on the total number of doctors in the country which has increased in the last 5 years. As of February 2021, 738 doctors are registered and from that number, 51% are local doctors, while almost all of the 2500 nurses are local. With the increase in the number, the Ministry of Health is able to conduct capacity building courses in collaboration with local Educational Institutions.
By 2022, 13 students will graduate from Diploma in Health Science (Dental Hygiene & Therapy). The first intake of Diploma in Cardiovascular Technology programme has begun on January this year and 12 students are expected to complete their studies in 2023. Apart from that, nursing training has been conducted in collaboration with Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre and IBTE. This include Diploma in Operating Theatre Assistant, Certificate in Caregivers, Advance Diploma in Palliative Care Nursing AND Advance Diploma in Maxillofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It is hoped that the nursing programmes will gradually produce more diploma graduates in specific fields, comprising local citizens and local workforce.
