The ASEAN Defence Senior Officials' Meeting, ADSOM has endorsed Brunei Darussalam's Stocktaking Paper which would pave the way for a Strategy Paper for the Future of ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting, ADMM to be produced in due course. ADSOM also endorsed the recommendation by the ADSOM Working Group or ADSOM WG to continue with the annual ADMM-Plus. Apart from that, the outcomes of the 18th ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces' Meeting were also shared by a representative from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, RBAF. The ADSOM was held yesterday morning at the International Convention Centre in Berakas, and was chaired by Retired Brigadier General Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma'awiah, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, in his capacity as ADSOM Leader of Brunei Darussalam.
The virtual meeting was attended by senior defence officials of ASEAN Member States attending in their respective capacity as ADSOM Leaders. Also present virtually was His Excellency Robert Matheus Michael Tene, the newly appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the ASEAN Political-Security Community for 2021-2024. The ADSOM continues the momentum of defence cooperation and endorses further the work which began with the ADSOM WG on the 2nd to 3rd of February 2021 and the second ADSOM WG on the 22nd to 23rd of March 2021. A total of eight papers, including a Stocktaking Paper, six Concept Papers and one Discussion Paper, were discussed and subsequently endorsed by ADSOM for approval and notation by the ADMM. Brunei Darussalam will chair the ADMM via video teleconference on the 15th of June 2021. Brunei Darussalam assumed the ASEAN Chair of 2021 following the handover ceremony in Viet Nam on the 10th of December 2020.
