The Ministry of Energy also gives priority to further develop the downstream energy sector by ensuring the growth of industries that add value to the country's oil and gas resources. The 'Brunei Fertilizer Industries' plant will start operations in the third quarter of this year. However, the Minister of Energy explained that 2021-2022 is also a critical year to further develop the Hengyi Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Plant Project in Pulau Muara Besar which has a positive impact on the economy and plays an important role in ensuring economic sustainability and the future of the country.
The Minister said the ministry will continue its efforts to ensure that the second phase of the plant's development will be able to start next year. The challenges that must be addressed together include maximizing the percentage of locals in the workforce, and the use of local companies for the project's development. Apart from that, it is to ensure safe operations in order to maintain the environment of the villages near Pulau Muara Besar and further reduce the industry's impact on climate change. The Ministry of Energy is committed in addressing these issues through a Whole of Nation Approach towards achieving the diverse and dynamic economic goals under Wawasan Brunei 2035.
