The official opening ceremony of the first meeting of the 17th session of the Legislative Council will be held on Monday, 15th of March 2021 at the Dewan Majlis Building. The official opening ceremony of the first meeting of the 17th session of the Legislative Council will be officiated by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Brunei Darussalam with a titah marking the start of the first meeting of the 17th session of the Legislative Council.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib, Speaker of the Legislative Council will chair the 17th Session of the Legislative Council Meeting and assisted by Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Judin bin Haji Asar, Clerk to the Legislative Council and Dayang Rose Aminah binti Haji Ismail, Deputy Clerk to the Legislative Council.
The Legislative Council Meeting Conference is entering its 17th year since its re-establishment in 2004 and will discuss and approve the 2021 Supply Bill for 2021/2022, which will go through three levels before being adopted and gazetted for use starting 1st April, 2021. The Legislative Council has become a strategic platform to deliberate on matters pertaining to the people and country's interest. With the criteria and initiative of the Legislative Council members, they will play a role as the people's voice in the country in deliberating and reviewing government policies for the well-being of the citizens of Brunei Darussalam. The Legislative Council was established according to Chapter 23 of the 1959 Brunei Constitution and the members appointed according to Chapter 24. The Legislative Council was dissolved in 1984 and reconvened on the 25th of September 2004. The establishment of the Conference was in conjunction with the 58th Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, on the 15th of July 2004. There are 36 Legislative Council members comprising Ex-Officio members, Titled Persons, Persons Who Have Achieved Distinction and District Representatives. In accordance to the safety guidelines issued during the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the public can watch the Legislative Council Meeting in a limited capacity.
The meeting's daily recordings can be watched on RTB Perdana at 9 in the evening and after the News at Ten broadcast.
