The COVID-19 pandemic's repercussion on humanity, healthcare, economic stability, food systems, education, mental and physical well-being has been unprecedented. In the face of these new challenges, world leaders are working tirelessly to adapt and innovate in ensuring continuity of normal life as much as possible. The government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam alongside fellow ASEAN member states continues to work collaboratively to combat challenges presented by this global pandemic, through active sharing of strategies and good practice which benefit their citizens. Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman stated the matter in her sabda at the Opening Ceremony of the 17th International School Brunei Borneo Global Issues Conference, ISB BGIC 2021, yesterday morning. The conference took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.
Upon arrival, Her Royal Highness as the Royal Patron of the conference was greeted by Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports and Mrs. Thomas, Executive Principal of ISB. Her Royal Highness signed a parchment.
Her Royal Highness also presented certificates of participation to representatives from the 22 schools attending the conference. With the theme 'Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities', the conference organised by ISB gathered participants to highlight their views on real-world and current development issues.
Mrs Laura Thomas, in her keynote address expressed pleasure in hosting the conference, to promote meaningful multi-sectoral cooperation and collaboration within the local community as well as enhancing educational experiences to benefit the nation and people in post-pandemic recovery.
Two local speakers shared their views on the conference's theme, 'Reduced Inequalities'. Awang Mohammad Isamuddin bin Abdullah Juna, The Acting Director of Prisons AND Dayang Noorsurainah Tengah, Member of the Board of Directors at An-Nur Harapan, shared their views on the conference's theme.
Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah in her sabda stresses that undoubtedly, this year's conference theme is highly relevant and fitting for youth dialogue and engagement, as Global community continues to face serious threats and witness the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on almost all aspects of our lives.
Her Royal Highness in her sabda said that the current situation presents the region with challenges, as well as new opportunities to advocate as well as create more inclusive and equitable systems that can promote a high quality of life for all people. The youth act as important agents of future changes for the development and progress of the nation's people and beloved.
Her Royal Highness then officiated the conference. Her Royal Highness then presented mementos to the conference's sponsors and supporters. The event is sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum Sendirian Berhad, Brunei LNG, Progresif, and Brunei Cement, with support from TLT Enterprise, Interhouse, D'Sunlit and Brunei Press Sendirian Berhad. Her Royal Highness then received a pasambah.
The ISB BGIC is an annual student-led Model United Nations style conference where participants represent countries to address various views on current, real world issues. The initiative is aimed at the development of students' understanding of global citizenship and critical skills in research, public speaking and negotiation.
