The value of our hard-fought independence is vital to be instilled within the current and future generations so that it will always be enjoyed and appreciated at all times. Hence, efforts such as the 'Merdeka' Poetry Declamation Competition is important, to instil and nurture love towards the country. Speaking at the National Level 'Merdeka' Poetry Declamation Competition in conjunction with the 37th National Day celebration, Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports explained that emphasising national identity through patriotic poetry can inspire the younger generation to be introspective and reflect on what they can contribute to the nation.
According to Yang Berhormat, the voices of the poets will become the history and guidance for future generations, while the patriotic poems are lifelong legacies in fulfilling the meaning of freedom. The minister also called on the poet and writer community as well as Brunei Darussalam citizens to elevate literature as a high cultural entity in the context of developing new ideas and meanings in order to understand the complexities of the future development of the nation's history. Yang Berhormat also urged for the people to use literature writing to pave a way to continue the nation's civilisation and instil love towards the country.
The competition featured two categories namely Category A for men and Category B for women. Awang Riduwan bin Johari was crowned as champion for Category A with the poem titled ' Kemerdekaan' by K.Manis. Meanwhile, Dayang Rozina binti Awang Haji Salim took first place in Category B with the poem titled 'Narasi Negeriku' by A. Hashim Hamid. The event coincided with the prize presentation for the Short Story Writing Competition and Bahana DBP 2019 Literary Criticism. The poetry declamation competition aimed to produce writers who have the potential in producing creative and non-creative works, possess critical thinking and have factual research as well as reviews.
