COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of technology in ensuring continuity despite operational disruptions. The closure of the court and the transition to a long-distance conference means the need for the court to adapt to the situation. Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of Law Year 2021 at the High Court, Bandar Seri Begawan, yesterday morning, Yang Amat Arif Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong Wan Oon, Chief Justice of the High Court stated that although several physical operations were temporarily suspended, with the help of technology, the court still considered 'open' for the purpose of filing, issuing and returning processes as well as to place orders through the court's e-Filing system.
Yang Amat Arif Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong also touched on several key developments in the court last year, including Mediation, Judgment Delivery, at the International Arena, Professional Development and Training as well as the Office of the Official Receiver. Initiatives taken by the Judiciary for next year include Criminal Justice, Apprenticeship and the Legal Profession.
Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Ahmad bin Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa, Attorney General in his speech hoped to continue to be a hardcore supporter of the Rule of Law in any time and situation for oneself and the world.
The Law Year Opening Ceremony was also attended by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa bin Pehin Datu Perdana Menteri Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Ibrahim, Special Adviser to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; and Yang Amat Arif Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Salim bin Awang Haji Besar, Chief Syar'ie Judge.
