Radio Television Brunei, RTB continues to move forward in broadcasting in the country to become a major and dynamic media organisation in national development. In line with its role as an effective broadcast institution that shapes an informative society through quality news and programmes, RTB is now fully broadcasting from the Sungai Akar New Building.
Since its establishment, RTB is now progressing with its own style and service design, which continues to be based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy concept. RTB continues to act as the medium between the government and the people, strategic partners in realising Wawasan Negara 2 RIBU 35 which is able to shape its own identity in line with the foundation of a zikir nation.
Radio Brunei Malay, English and Chinese services was established on the 2nd of May 1957. Officiated by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration. Its transmission at that time only covered 5 miles from the broadcast transmitter area. Radio at that time can only be heard for two hours and 45 minutes daily. The first outside broadcast was the Official Opening Ceremony of Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. With rapid development, Radio Brunei now has 5 channels that are always ready by way of planning to act as a platform to disseminate the government and community messages.
Television services began its broadcast on the 1st of March 1975 and only had one main channel. Television services was launched by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on the 9th of July 1975 and simultaneously made Brunei Darussalam as the first country in South East Asia to start television broadcast in full colour. The historic launch was followed by programmes and most interesting was the news broadcast in Malay and the appearance of the first local news presenter.
Despite the rapid expansion and development of digital technology, RTB continues to enhance the quality of its services through interesting programmes and activities. RTB is also a part of community life and as an information media that plays a role in educating society.
