292 graduates received the Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, Masters and Bachelor degrees and diplomas in various disciplines during the 10th Convocation of Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA today. His Majesty Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of UNISSA presented the degrees and diplomas to the graduates in the ceremony that took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday morning.
The ceremony began with the reading of Al-Fatihah led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.
Upon arriving, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education as the Chairman of the UNISSA Council and Doctor Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, Rector of UNISSA. Today's UNISSA convocation was different from the previous ones because for the first time this year, Mushaf UNISSA was shouldered at the head of the Chancellor's Procession into the hall.
Also gracing the ceremony was His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, The Crown Prince and Senior Minister at The Prime Minister's Office in his capacity as the Pro-Chancellor of UNISSA.
The convocation ceremony commenced with the reading of Al-Quran's Surah Al-Isra by Awangku Muhamad Zul Iskandar bin Pengiran Zulkifli, Bachelor of Science in Islamic Finance graduate, while the interpretations were read by Muhammad Hafiz bin Haji Hamzulani, Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Islamic Laws graduate.
In the welcoming speech, the Rector of UNISSA highlighted UNISSA's accomplishments that have raised its international profile. These included winning for the 2nd consecutive time, the Global Islamic Finance Award 2020 (GIFA 2020) in the GIFA Market Leadership Award 2020 Category (Education in Islamic Banking and Finance) through the Faculty of Economy and Islamic Finance. UNISSA's Islamic Finance Bachelor degree for the first time this year also received recognition from the Islamic Banking and Finance Institute of Malaysia, IBFIM when 9 of the programme's graduands were awarded the Associate Qualification in Islamic Finance (AQIF) certificate which is also recognised by the world's financial industry and received full accreditation from the Finance Accreditation Agency (FAA).
His Majesty then delivered the titah of consent to confer the degrees and diplomas to the graduates.
Out of the 292 graduates, 8 received the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, 44 received Master's degrees, 13 received Diplomas in Islamic Law and Syarie Law; 9 obtained Post-Graduate Diplomas, 187 received Bachelor degrees and 32 received the Higher National Diploma in Shariah Criminal Justice System.
The graduates included 26 international students from 12 countries.
For the first time this year, the convocation witnessed the first batch of students graduating from the Tahfiz and Qiraat Bachelor Degree and Halal Science Master's Degree Programmes. Both programmes are very significant in the government's efforts towards balanced development of the individual's potential and the national economy in accordance with al-Quran and as-Sunnah.
By offering 30 academic programmes in various fields and levels of study, UNISSA is the sole public university that fully applies Arabic and English in its study programmes.
Since offering the Islamic Studies Programme in the region, UNISSA has become the alternative for regional and international students in furthering Islamic studies at a higher level. To date, UNISSA has acted as the studies centre to 181 international students from 25 countries.

Established on the 1st of January 2007, UNISSA can now carry out the trust as a true Centre for Higher Islamic Studies to produce authoritative religious scholars and academics. It is capable of fulfilling the national aspiration. During the 10 years of its establishment, UNISSA has produced more than one thousand and five hundred graduates in diverse disciplines.
UNISSA's progress will become more prominent when its permanent campus is established in Mukim Labu in Temburong District. It will raise UNISSA's reputation and realise the country's hope to see the university become the regional hub for Higher Islamic Studies.
