As the policy to shape the direction of Brunei Darussalam to become a low carbon and sustainable nation, the Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Change, BNCCC, has launched the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy, BNCCP. The function took place at the Banquet Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office Complex. Speaking at the launching ceremony, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Engineer Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Minister of Development as Co-Chairman of BNCCC said that the core strategic areas are guided by the principles of achieving the Wawasan Brunei 2035 and promoting economic security, sustainability and prosperity through a low carbon approach in protecting the pristine environment to ensure environmental sustainability.
Present were Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications and Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Acting Minister of Energy as members of BNCCC. Also present were Dato Seri Paduka Architect Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, Deputy Minister of Development and Yang Berhormat Dayang Khairunnisa binti Haji Awang Ash’ari, Member of the Legislative Council.
The provision of BNCCP involves 39 stakeholders from the government departments, private sectors, Research Institutions, Academics, Associations, Non-government organisation, NGO as well as 51 youth representatives which requires a Whole of Nation approach.
The function ran concurrently with the presentation of BNCCP book which was handed over by Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya, Permanent Secretary for Energy at the Ministry of Energy as Chairman of the Executive Committee on Climate Change. The BNCCC was formally established in 2018 to address the challenges and impacts of climate change on a national level and strengthen the climate change governance. The BNCCC is jointly chaired by the Minister of Development and Minister of Energy. Its members also include Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, and Deputy Minister of Energy. BCCS was also established in the same year as a secretariat to coordinate the climate change governance, as well as, given mandate to develop, implement and monitor climate change policies, actions and strategies in Brunei Darussalam.
