Legislative Council Meeting to be Held on 9th March

The official opening ceremony of the first meeting of the 16th session of the Legislative Council Meeting will be held on Monday, 14th Rejab 1441 Hijrah corresponding to 9th March 2020 at the Dewan Persidangan of Legislative Council Building, Jalan Dewan Majlis. The Opening Ceremony will be officiated by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Brunei Darussalam.

The 16th Session of the Legislative Council Meeting will be chaired by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib as Speaker of the Legislative Council and assisted by Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Judin bin Haji Asar, Clerk to the Legislative Council and Dayang Rose Aminah binti Haji Ismail, Deputy Clerk to the Legislative Council.

The Legislative Council Meeting Conference is entering its 16-years since its re-establishment in 2004 and will discuss and approve the key points namely 2020 Bills, 2020/2021 government budget to be adopted beginning 1st April, 2020. In addition to the annual Budget, the Conference will also discuss issues and recommendations that will be beneficial to the country and the people being studied and evaluated in detail according to their needs and priorities.

In upholding His Majesty's titah, the focus of conference is to discuss the implementation of strategies for sustainable economic growth towards diversifying the country's economy, in discussing the updating of policy and procedure to be more transparent and orderly and within the importance of youth as well as the welfare and well-being of the citizens and residents of the country. In conveying the wishes of His Majesty the Sultan and the Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Legislative Council Meeting is used as a channel or platform for members of the Legislative Council to present their thoughts in a peaceful manner.

The Legislative Council was established in accordance with Chapter 23 of the Brunei 1959 Constitution and its members were appointed in accordance with Chapter 24. The Legislative Council was dissolved in 1984 and resumed on 25th September, 2004. The setting up of the conference was in conjunction with His Majesty's 58th Birthday Anniversary on 15th July, 2004. Members of the Legislative Council consist of 36 Ex-Officio members, titled persons, and persons who have achieved distinction as well as district representatives.
