The community need to play a vital role in together looking after the underprivileged including the visually impaired individuals. Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports made the remarks during the Opening Ceremony for the 5th Braille, Orientation and Mobility workshop. The workshop was organised by the Community Development Department - JAPEM, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in collaboration with Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education; Ophthalmology Unit, Ministry of Health and Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind. The event was held at Pusat Bahagia in Kampung Pulaie.
Yang Berhormat added, more importantly this year's programme covered the advanced level. The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports also urged last year's participants to take part in a higher level programme.
25 participants comprising private individuals, government agencies and private agencies took part in the workshop. The workshop among others aimed to provide exposure on the usage of braille as well as its importance to the visually impaired individuals, in terms of reading and writing.
The event ran concurrently with the presentation of braille machine from Pengiran Haji Suhardi bin Pengiran Haji Nordin, representative of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. The programme was highlighted with a short briefing on visual impairment as well as sharing session on the challenges faced by them.
