Preparation for COVID-19

The Ministry of Health is now actively making a preparation to handle the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19. That includes conducting diagnostic tests through National Virology References Laboratory under Laboratory Service Department. According to Doctor Zainun binti Zaini, Scientific Chief Officer, National Virology Reference Laboratory has begun the preparation in facing any COVID-19 infection in the country in January. The preparation is made in many ways such as communicating with some agencies including World Health Organization, WHO, and reference laboratory in countries in the region to get the details about COVID-19 as well as advice in handling the virus. Doctor Zainun was interviewed during Rampai Pagi RTB, this morning.

Doctor Zainun said that the Ministry has obtained safety equipment for the use of staff while handling patient sample who is suspected to be infected with COVID-19, ensuring machines and equipment are ready to carry out tests in tracing COVID-19, strengthening the Molecular Laboratory Unit works and policy as well as SOP of packaging and delivering samples. Currently, 8 National Virology Reference Laboratory technical staffs have been trained and are competent to conduct tests in tracing the virus. As of now, the Virology Laboratory has received 13 patient specimens from the National Isolation Centre, and found out that all specimens were found to be COVID-19 negative.
