The School of Agro-Technology and Applied Sciences, Institute of Brunei Technical Education, IBTE, this morning held an official paddy-harvesting ceremony for the school's first intake of its HNTec in Agrotechnology programme specializing in Rice Industry, under the tutelage of LiveWIRE AgroBiz. The ceremony was held at the paddy fields of IBTE Agro-Technology Campus, Wasan.
The paddy-harvesting ceremony was officiated Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education.
Dayang Hajah Rosita binti Haji Hassan, the Chairperson of the LiveWIRE AgroBiz project in her welcoming speech stated that the Live WIRE AgroBiz was established on the 24th of January 2019 with the signing of memorandum of understanding between IBTE and LiveWIRE Brunei to develop 10 hectares of paddy fields as training site for the young farmers from the institute. It is part of the preparation towards becoming successful farmers and entrepreneurs upon the completion of the programme. The project has been proven to be successful within one year of its implementation.
Brunei Shell Petroleum, BSP, through LiveWIRE Brunei entrepreneurship arm and Social investment Flagship programme, allocated funds to support the Agrobiz Padi Agropreneur scheme under IBTE, with the objective to provide young agropreneurs with adequate technical knowledge in rice farming and develop agropreneural skills to help them develop their own rice farms, and start their businesses. These is done by developing conducive infrastructure, for an effective rice production training programme with support from modern and green technology for water and crop management and well experience and competent instructors.
It is hoped that they will become farmers or become service providers for the rice industry after the programme, where they can further explore the practice with the business scheme offered by the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food. In addition, the students will also be given the opportunity to join LiveWIRE's Business Award Start-Up Funding Scheme, which can provide seed-funding to help early stage agropreneurs grow their business. Also present were Datin Seri Paduka Doctor Hajah Romaizah binti Hj Mohd Salleh, Deputy Minister of Education; Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Arshad @ Haji Sabli and Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Mohimin bin Haji Johari @ Jahari, Members of Legislative Council.
