Introductory Course on Safeguarding Children for Health Professionals

The number of child abuse cases from 2014 and 2018 had increased by 23 Percent. Every year, medical social work division of Ministry of Health receives around 300 cases for various child safeguarding concerns. These would include an average of 30 teenage pregnancies and between 40 to 50 cases of child abuse every year. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Md Isham bin Haji Jaafar was speaking during the Opening Ceremony for the Introductory Course on Safeguarding Children for Health Professionals this morning. The Minister of Health added a lot more children are suffering because their plight had gone undetected and unreported.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Md Isham said safeguarding children from violence requires a whole nation approach. Strengthening Children's Rights in Health is extremely important and the Ministry is committed to improve safeguarding and protection of children in all hospitals and clinics. Yang Berhormat added the ministry also aims to integrate the process in ongoing efforts for improving the quality of hospital care for children where equality and non-discrimination is promoted to ensure the children's rights are met.

The 2-day course is attended by 30 health professionals and 21 Observers and the course facilitation led by Dr Henry Ruiz, International Consultant on Child Right - Consultant to UNICEF Country Office.
