The Brunei Darussalam Intellectual Property Office

The Attorney general in his speech among other matters touched on the Brunei Darussalam Intellectual Property Office also known as BruIPO, which is now officially part of the Attorney General's Chambers. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni bin Haji Abdul Majid said the Attorney General's Chambers has been extended with the transfer of the BruIPO in April last year aimed to facilitate intellectual property protection and enforcement.

Speaking on legislation, Yang Berhormat said the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Order and Prevention of People Smuggling Order came into force last year. These orders have enacted new additional elements in its provision in terms of court procedures and protection of victims in order to strengthen and improve the existing legislative framework. Yang Berhormat added that these new legislations clearly demonstrates the country's recognition of the vulnerability of victims of human trafficking and smuggling, commitment to the protection of these victims and focus in bringing to justice the perpetrators in a swift and efficient manner.

Yang Berhormat also touched on money laundering. According to Yang Berhormat, there is an increase in the prosecution of money laundering cases which involves cases from breaking up large amounts of cash into smaller amounts, depositing into bank accounts, selling of proceeds of crime and purchasing items using proceeds of crime. Yang Berhormat said money laundering has become so sophisticated that there is a more pressing need for consultation, coordination and cooperation amongst countries especially given the technological advances which has aided transboundary crimes. In this regard, Brunei Darussalam and the ASEAN member countries signed a treaty to tackle transboundary crime through close cooperation and coordination among member states.

Pengiran Izad Ryan bin Pengiran Laila Kanun DiRaja Pengiran Haji Bahrin, President of the Law Society, in his speech stated the society's commitment to continue to work together with the Judiciary Department and Attorney General's Chambers as well as continue to support the aspirations of the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. Also present was Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.
