A Look Back at Brunei Darussalam’s Independence Day

The 1st of January 1984 is a historic day when Brunei Darussalam declared its independence. The remarkable moment is the greatest gift from Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien to citizens of the country.

The ceremony held on the 1st of January 1984 witnessed Brunei Darussalam granted its full internal self-government after 95 years under Great Britain's protection. The ceremony held at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital was witnessed by thousands of citizens and residents in the country. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam in a titah the declare and proclaimed Brunei Darussalam's independence.
