The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested a 25-year-old local man suspected to be involved in illegal drug activities. He was detained in a car at the parking lot of a supermarket in Seria. A search of the suspect's car uncovered packets of dry leaves believed to be Cannabis weighing about 234.5 grammes.
Also found were utensils used for consuming drugs and several plastic packages believed to be used for packing drugs. The case is investigated under Section 3A of the Misuse of Drugs Acts (MDA), Chapter 27 for the possession of controlled drugs for the purpose of trafficking. It carries a minimum penalty of 5 years of imprisonment and 5 strokes of the cane and maximum penalty of 20 years of imprisonment and 15 strokes of the cane. Possession of more than 100 grammes of controlled drugs carries a death penalty.
The case is also investigated under Section 6(b) of the MDA for the consumption of controlled drugs that carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of $20,000 or both. Meanwhile Section 7 of the act is for the possession of utensils used for drug consumption that carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of $10,000 or both.
