At least 700 thousand people die each year due to drug-resistant diseases. According to a United Nations report by the Interagency Coordination Group IACG, on Antimicrobial Resistance AMR, death caused by such diseases could increase more than ten-fold to 10 million deaths annually by 2050. This was shared by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health during the 'World Antibiotic Awareness Week Symposium 2019', yesterday afternoon. The event took place at the Dewan Al-Afiah, Ministry of Health.
The event coincided with the launching of three books entitled "Brunei Darussalam Antimicrobial Resistance Action Plan"; "National Best Practice Guidance for Good Antibiotic Prescribing Practice (GAPP)" AND "Infection Control and Risk Assessment (ICRA) Procedure". Doctor Awang Haji Zulaidi bin Haji Abdul Latif, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health AND Awang Abdul Halidi bin Mohd Salleh, Deputy Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism received "Brunei Darussalam Antimicrobial Resistance Action Plan" books.
Four panellists participated in the symposium sessions. The week's theme is "Stewards for the Future: Stop overuse and misuse of antibiotics".
