Brunei Darussalam will continue to support global efforts to benefit hydrogen energy and explore its uses. The Minister of Energy said that hydrogen energy is gaining momentum as one of the key technology options and may play a role in the energy transition and decarbonisation of society. Speaking at the Opening Ceremony for its Hydrogenation Demo Plant for the Project yesterday morning, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mat Suny Bin Haji Md Hussein explained that the Advanced Hydrogen Energy Chain Association for Technology Development, AHEAD, which is a Japanese consortium set to operate and manage the world's first global hydrogen supply chain demonstration project between the Government of Brunei Darussalam and Japan.
Yang Berhormat said as reported by the International Energy Agency last year, global energy demand grew at its fastest pace in last decade. Yang Berhormat said there is a growing need to fuel this demand sustainably, to balance the impact on the environment and future energy security.
Yang Berhormat said the plant produces hydrogen and repackages it in the form of a stable compound. Yang Berhormat further explained the first shipment to the receiving plant at Kawasaki, Japan would be a world record for transporting hydrogen over a long distance. Over 200 metric tonnes of hydrogen are expected to be supplied to Japan to fuel power plants over the course of 2020.
The plant which began construction last year was completed last September. Hydrogen is produced from natural gas via the steam reformation process. The first hydrogen was exported from Muara Port to Japan on the 17th of this month with its operation expected to continue for one year. The exported hydrogen will be used as fuel for the gas turbine power generator in Toa Oil Company in Kawasaki City. Also present were Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy, Yang Berhormat Awang Hanapi bin Muhd Siput and Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin, members of the Legislative Council.
