3rd ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al- Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di- Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, this morning attended the 3rd ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit. In the First Session, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di- Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, as Country Coordinator for ASEAN- Republic of Korea Dialogue Relations, in a titah says that Republic of Korea remains important to ASEAN and should continue to build on existing connections to maintain peace, stability and security through dialogue and consultations, as well as regular exchanges. In this regard, His Majesty in his titah says, ASEAN thanked President Moon for his personal efforts through the Republic of Korea's New Southern Policy and the support of the ASEAN- Republic of Korea Cooperation Fund. His Majesty says, the future ASEAN- Republic of Korea relations will face both opportunities and challenges in technological advancements, with cybersecurity being the most prominent. In this regard, His Majesty says that ASEAN welcomed the establishment of the ASEAN- Republic of Korea Ministerial Meeting to address the problem of transnational crimes. The 3rd ASEAN- ROK Commemorative Summit took place at the Busan Exhibition and Conference Centre, BEXCO.

Upon arrival, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di- Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was officially welcomed by His Excellency Moon Jae-in, President of the Republic of Korea.

His Majesty together with other leaders then held a photo session.

The Plenary Session of the Commemorative Summit commenced with the Opening Statement from President Moon.

In a titah, His Majesty acknowledged the development made through 30 years of ASEAN-Republic of Korea relations, which included overcoming challenges such as financial crises, health pandemics and security concerns. His Majesty in a titah says that Brunei Darussalam renewed and reiterated its commitment to work closely with the Republic of Korea and other ASEAN Member States to advance this partnership.

Meanwhile at the Second Session, His Majesty's titah touched on the importance for ASEAN and the Republic of Korea to strengthen economic resilience and enhance connectivity to sustain the economic growth and prosperity of the region. The Republic of Korea's leadership in digitalisation and readiness for the Fourth Industrial Revolution can help transform ASEAN's economy through innovation and entrepreneurship. His Majesty welcomed measures towards a more integrated region, and looked forward to the conclusion of an Air Services Agreement to increase trade, tourism and investment opportunities. However, in pursuing connectivity and developing smart cities, ASEAN and the Republic of Korea would also need to address environmental issues. The ASEAN-Republic of Korea Joint Vision Statement for Peace, Prosperity and Partnership was issued.
