Special National Malay Language Oratory Competition Finals

Since the establishment of the Brunei Darussalam 1959 Written Constitution, the country has made Malay Language as the official language of Brunei Darussalam. In the country's education system, both Malay and English languages are used while learning other languages are also encouraged such as Arabic, Mandarin, French, Japanese, Korean and others. Speaking at the 2nd Special National Malay Language Oratory Competition Finals, the Minister of Home Affairs explained that the Tionghua community in the country proved that they are able to communicate in their own mother tongue and capable as well as skilled in Malay Language. Therefore, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong expressed his hope that the Malay Language mastery is not only showcased during oratory competition, it should also be practised in daily life.

Yang Berhormat also expressed the hope that the generation of today will have the skill and creativity in Malay language, as language is the communication tool of a culture. The minister added that mastering a language is the key to understanding the culture of a nation.

15 participants competed in 3 categories namely Category A for Primary School pupils; Category B for Secondary School students and Category C for Tionghua association members.

The competition was enlivened with singing performances by students from Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan.

Prizes were presented by the Minister of Home Affairs. Ang Chin Gui from Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan won Category A, while Category B went to Ling Yi Zhen and Helen Lim Eng Hua placed first in Category C. The competition was organised by the Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association with the cooperation of Radio Television Brunei, RTB; Brunei History Centre; and Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan. Also present were Awang Mohd. Amir Hairil bin Haji Mahmud and Awang Salminan bin Haji Burut, Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Home Affairs; Awang Haji Muhammad Suffian bin Haji Bungsu, Director of RTB and Awang Lim Han Chiong, Chairman of Brunei Darussalam Hokkien Association.
