The country's super markets have been called to cooperate with food importers and distributors as continuous support in providing or adding varieties of selected health products. They are also urged to work together in organising roadshows or health education activities for the public such as healthy food sale months or campaigns. The call was made by Doctor Haji Zulaidi bin Haji Abd Latif, Deputy Permanent Secretary (for Professional) at the Ministry of Health at the official launch of Healthy Supermarket Programme for Leong Wui Supermarket yesterday afternoon. The text of the speech was read by Doctor Dayang Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Md Kassim, Head of Health Promotion Centre.
Doctor Haji Zulaidi's speech added the participation of a major supermarket in the Healthy Supermarket Programme and support from the Ministry of Health are intended to spur and motivate other supermarkets in the country to participate in the programme in the future.
During the event, Doctor Dayang Hajah Norhayati presented Certificate of Participation to Awang Adrien Jhonny, Manager of Leong Wui Supermarket. This time the programme is hoped to enhance knowledge and encourage the public to give priority to healthier foods and drinks.
In the programme, the said supermarket provides shelves for selected healthy food to make it easier for customers to identify healthier foods and drinks and provide customer friendly labels. At the same time the programme encourages the local food industry and supermarkets to support the healthy food eating lifestyle by providing alternative foods and drinks or those recognised as healthier choices.
