Cardiovascular disease in Brunei Darussalam, remains the second highest cause of death after cancer and contributed to nearly 25 percent of deaths in 2018. According to the Minister of Health, more worryingly, cardiovascular diseases are increasingly occurring in the younger population. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, voiced the concern during the 6th Annual Scientific Meeting, ASM of the Cardiac Society Brunei Darussalam. The meeting took place yesterday morning at the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre.
In Brunei Darussalam, angioplasty is performed at Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre, JPMC, the country's only cardiac treatment centre. Cardiac failure can be caused by various factors among them delayed treatment and diagnosis. Also held was a talk by Professor Jeroen Bax, Immediate Past-President of the European Society of Cardiology. With the theme 'Clinical Cardiology in Everyday Practice', the one-day meeting was attended by some 200 participants comprising doctors, nurses and other allied health professionals from the Ministry of Health and Gleneagles JPMC along with other institutions. Also present were Awang Haji Abdul Manap bin Haji Othman, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Doctor Sofian bin Dato Paduka Doctor Haji Johar, President of the Cardiac Society, Brunei Darussalam as the Chairman of the Organising Committee.
